School of Health Sciences Dean Dr. Dessie Levy Received Black Excellence Award from The Milwaukee Times

Dr. Dessie Levy, dean of the Milwaukee Area Technical College’s School of Health Sciences, received a 2015 Black Excellence Award from The Milwaukee Times newspaper at a ceremony Feb. 27 at the Italian Community Center/ The awards are presented annually to highlight and honor individuals who are making a positive difference in the community.
Levy holds a doctorate in learning, leadership and service and a master’s degree in healthcare administration, both from Cardinal Stritch University. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Marian College; a master of nursing-obstetrical nurse practitioner degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee/Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, Inc.; and a diploma in nursing from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing.
As dean of MATC’s School of Health Sciences, Levy has overseen allied health, dental and nursing programs since 2005. She also is an assistant professor in Concordia University of Wisconsin’s graduate nursing program. She served as manager of outpatient health services/academic clinics and manager of women’s health at Aurora Sinai Medical Health Center in Milwaukee before joining MATC. She has held administrative and clinical positions at Columbia/St. Mary’s, United Methodist Children’s Services, St. Mary’s Hospital, the Milwaukee VA Medical Center and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wisconsin, Inc.
Levy serves on numerous executive boards and advisory councils throughout the country. She is president elect for the Association of Nurse Educators of Wisconsin, a board member for the Wisconsin League for Nursing, and a lifetime member and chair of the Policy Committee for the Milwaukee Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association. She is a national director for the H.O.P.E. Ministry for the National Baptist Association, USA, Inc. She also has received many awards and honors for her service and leadership. She recently was the subject of a cover story in Black Women 50+ Magazine.
